WHY CARPENTER ANTS BECOME A PROBLEM ON LONG ISLAND.

Carpenter ants often enter homes and buildings through gaps around foundations, siding, windows, doors, rooflines, and utility openings. They are especially attracted to damp, softened, or moisture-damaged wood, where they can excavate galleries and establish protected nesting areas.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood, but they remove it to create space for their colonies. Over time, an active infestation can contribute to additional damage and may indicate a larger moisture problem within the structure. Pestify identifies active trails, nesting conditions, entry points, and moisture sources so treatment can focus on the source of the problem—not just the ants you can see.

our carpenter ant control process.

Property inspection.

We inspect the interior and exterior of your property for carpenter ant trails, winged ants, nesting areas, wood debris, moisture conditions, damaged wood, and potential entry points. We also look for signs of indoor satellite nests and nearby outdoor colonies.

Targeted treatment.

We use targeted baits, crack-and-crevice applications, void treatments, and exterior treatments where appropriate to address active travel routes and likely nesting areas. Products are professionally selected and applied according to label directions.

ONGOING protection.

Quarterly or seasonal service helps monitor new activity, address changing conditions, and maintain protection around vulnerable entry points and nesting areas. You receive a detailed service report after every visit.

Carpenter Ant FACTS.

Common  local carpenter ant:

Eastern black carpenter ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus)

Active season:

Most active from spring through fall, although indoor activity may continue throughout the year

Size:

Workers are generally about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long; queens and winged reproductives may be larger

Color:

Usually black, reddish-black, or a combination of black and reddish-brown

Risks:

Carpenter ants excavate wood to create nesting galleries. An active colony may contribute to damage over time and can be a warning sign of excess moisture or decaying wood

Where they live:

Moisture-damaged wood, wall voids, window and door frames, rooflines, decks, hollow doors, trees, stumps, and firewood

How Pestify helps: We inspect for active colonies, nesting conditions, moisture problems, and entry points before applying targeted treatments to the areas most likely contributing to the infestation

COMMON CARPENTER ANT NESTING AREAS.

Carpenter ants may establish a main colony outdoors and create additional satellite nests inside nearby structures. Identifying their nesting conditions and travel routes helps Pestify determine the right treatment strategy for your property.

MOISTURE-DAMAGED WOOD

Carpenter ants are commonly associated with damp, softened, or decaying wood around leaking roofs, plumbing problems, windows, doors, bathrooms, kitchens, and poorly ventilated areas.

TREES, STUMPS, AND FIREWOOD

Outdoor colonies may develop inside hollow trees, dead branches, tree stumps, landscape timbers, firewood piles, and other protected areas near the structure.

WALL VOIDS AND STRUCTURAL GAPS

Satellite nests may form inside wall voids, hollow doors, window frames, roof areas, insulation, and other protected spaces where warmth and moisture are available.

5 things to know about carpenter antS.

MOISTURE OFTEN CONTRIBUTES TO ACTIVITY

Leaking pipes, roof damage, poor drainage, condensation, and damp wood can create favorable nesting conditions.

VISIBLE ANTS MAY BE ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEM

The workers you see may be traveling a considerable distance from the nest. Effective control requires identifying active routes, favorable nesting conditions, and likely colony locations.

THEY DO NOT EAT WOOD

Carpenter ants remove wood to create smooth nesting galleries. Unlike termites, they do not use wood as a food source.

A COLONY MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE NEST

A main colony may be located outdoors while one or more satellite nests develop inside the structure. Treating only one active area may not address the entire infestation.

THEY ARE OFTEN MORE ACTIVE AT NIGHT

Carpenter ants frequently leave their nests after dark to search for food and moisture. Their trails may be easier to notice during the evening or nighttime hours.

SIGNS YOU HAVE A CARPENTER ANT PROBLEM.

LARGE ANTS INSIDE YOUR PROPERTY

You repeatedly see large black or reddish-black ants traveling along floors, walls, countertops, windows, or other consistent pathways.

WINGED ANTS INDOORS

Finding multiple winged carpenter ants indoors, particularly near windows or light sources, may indicate that a mature colony is nesting within or close to the structure.

SAWDUST-LIKE MATERIAL NEAR WOOD

Small piles of coarse wood shavings, insect fragments, or other debris beneath openings in wood may be material removed while carpenter ants create nesting galleries.

ACTIVITY AROUND DAMP OR DAMAGED WOOD

You notice ants near leaking pipes, window frames, roof areas, decks, bathrooms, kitchens, or other locations where wood may be damp, softened, or deteriorating.

CARPENTER ANT PREVENTION TIPS.

Prevention alone may not eliminate an established carpenter ant colony, but these steps can reduce favorable conditions and support professional treatment.

CORRECT MOISTURE PROBLEMS

Repair leaking pipes, roof leaks, damaged gutters, drainage problems, and other conditions that allow wood to remain damp.

REPAIR DAMAGED WOOD

Replace rotted, softened, or moisture-damaged wood around windows, doors, decks, rooflines, and other vulnerable areas.

TRIM TREES AND LANDSCAPING

Keep tree branches, shrubs, vines, and other vegetation from touching the structure and creating pathways inside.

MOVE FIREWOOD AND LUMBER AWAY

Store firewood and lumber off the ground and away from the building to reduce protected nesting areas near the structure.

SEAL CRACKS AND OPENINGS

Seal gaps around foundations, siding, windows, doors, rooflines, pipes, wires, and utility penetrations where carpenter ants may enter.
